Shapewear Care Guide
Washing Instructions
-
Hand wash is best: Delicate fabrics like Spandex, nylon, and lace require gentle care to maintain compression.
-
Use lukewarm or cold water: Hot water can weaken fibers and reduce elasticity.
-
Mild detergent only: Harsh soaps break down shaping properties. Choose a gentle, non-abrasive detergent.
-
No bleach, fabric softeners, or dryer sheets: These degrade compression materials and leave residue.
-
Machine wash (if allowed): Place in a mesh laundry bag and use the gentle cycle with cold water.
Drying & Storage
-
Air dry only: Heat from dryers breaks down compression fibers, causing shapewear to lose its sculpting effect.
-
Lay flat to dry: Hanging can cause stretching, especially for high-compression pieces.
-
Store flat or folded: Avoid hanging to maintain the garment's shape and elasticity.
Activewear Care Guide
Washing Instructions
-
Read the label: Always check the care instructions specific to your garment to ensure proper washing.
-
Turn garments inside out: This protects fabric, prevents color fading, and reduces friction damage.
-
Use cold water & mild detergent: Harsh detergents break down performance fabrics, while cold water prevents shrinking and preserves elasticity.
-
Hand wash if possible: For delicate pieces like leggings or compression gear, hand washing extends their lifespan.
-
Machine wash on a gentle cycle: If machine washing, use a mesh laundry bag to prevent stretching or snagging.
-
Avoid fabric softeners & bleach: Fabric softeners leave residue that can reduce moisture-wicking properties, and bleach weakens fibers.
Drying & Storage
-
Air dry only: Heat from dryers can break down elasticity, causing shrinkage and wear. Lay flat or hang to dry.
-
Avoid direct sunlight: Prolonged sun exposure can cause fading and weaken fabric fibers.
-
Store properly: Fold leggings, bras, and tops neatly or lay them flat to maintain their shape. Avoid hanging heavy activewear items, as this can stretch them out.
General Maintenance Tips
Shapewear Maintenance
✔ Wash After Every Few Uses
Unlike activewear, shapewear doesn’t need to be washed daily unless it gets sweaty. Washing every 2–3 wears maintains compression without over-washing.
✔ Hand Wash Whenever Possible
Compression fabrics and delicate materials last longer when gently washed by hand in cold water. Machine washing, even on delicate cycles, can weaken elasticity over time.
✔ Use a Mesh Laundry Bag (If Machine Washing)
If you must use a washing machine, place shapewear in a mesh laundry bag to prevent stretching, snagging, and tearing. Always use a gentle cycle.
✔ Never Wring or Twist
Twisting shapewear to remove excess water can damage fibers and alter its shape. Instead, gently press out water and lay it flat to dry.
✔ Always Air Dry
Tumble drying can permanently damage compression fabrics, causing stretch loss and warping. Lay shapewear flat on a towel and reshape while drying.
✔ Rotate Your Shapewear
Using the same piece every day stretches it out faster. Have multiple pieces in rotation to maintain its firmness and support.
✔ Store Properly
-
Lay flat or fold neatly to preserve shape.
-
Avoid hanging shapewear, especially high-compression garments, as it can stretch out the fabric over time.
-
Keep in a dry place away from humidity to prevent fabric degradation.
✔ Avoid Lotions & Oils Before Wearing
Body lotions, oils, and perfumes can break down elastic fibers over time, reducing the garment’s ability to shape and support.
✔ Check for Loose Seams & Damage
Regularly inspect shapewear for loose stitching or worn-out elastic. If it loses compression, it’s time for a replacement.
✔ Choose the Right Size
Forcing yourself into too-tight shapewear can stretch the material beyond its limits, leading to faster wear and tear. Always opt for the correct size for long-lasting performance.
Activewear Maintenance
✔ Wash After Every Use
Sweat, bacteria, and body oils can break down fabric over time. Washing immediately prevents odors and fabric deterioration.
✔ Rotate Your Activewear
Wearing the same leggings or sports bras every day can reduce their elasticity. Keep multiple sets in rotation to allow fabric recovery.
✔ Use the Right Detergent
Opt for a sports-specific detergent that breaks down sweat and odor without damaging moisture-wicking properties. Avoid strong chemicals.
✔ Avoid Over-Washing
While washing after every use is important, excessive machine washing can wear down the fibers. Use hand washing when possible to extend lifespan.
✔ Dry Properly
Never use a dryer. Heat can damage elastic fibers, causing shrinkage or loss of stretch. Always air dry away from direct sunlight.
✔ Avoid Rough Surfaces
Sitting on rough surfaces like concrete or gym benches can cause pilling and fabric damage. Lay down a towel or mat when necessary.
✔ Store Correctly
-
Fold or roll leggings and tops to prevent creases.
-
Avoid hanging heavy items like compression tights, as gravity can stretch them out.
-
Keep away from damp areas to prevent mold and bacteria buildup.
✔ Remove Immediately After Workouts
Leaving sweat-soaked activewear on for too long promotes bacteria growth, leading to persistent odors and potential fabric damage.
✔ Use Cold Water & Gentle Cycles
Hot water shrinks and weakens performance fabrics. Always wash in cold water on a delicate or gentle cycle.
✔ Say No to Fabric Softeners
Fabric softeners coat moisture-wicking fibers, reducing breathability and sweat absorption. Stick to mild detergents only.
